Fluorite (1473)
LOCATION
3rd Cavern, Summit Cleft, Weisseck Mt., Lungau, Salzburg, Austria
SIZE
126 x 87 x 55 mm
DESCRIPTION
The largest cavern was 45 meters deep inside the mountain, the whole cavern was filled with Fluorite crystals - the floor, the walls and even the roof. The crystals at the floor we not in good quality, nearly all material from the floor was etched. The specimens from the walls and from some smaller pockets show better quality and less etching, but only the specimens from the roof show the very best quality and a low number of pieces were not etched at all and showed glossy faces. This specimen is one of them!
But it also shows some further important indicators - nearly all specimen from the Summit Cleft show incredible internal color, but also here we recognized several different levels of quality. Most material needs strong backlight and lamps to expose the internal colors, a lower number of specimen showed the colors already with moderately backlight and only a fist full of pieces were translucent enough to expose their internal colors with just a touch of back-light - like the particular one. Only a window on a cloudy and rainy afternoon is enough to expose these strong colors - I would say less than 5% of the entire discovery reached this level.
Finally - all specimen were clusters, they consisted of stepped inter-grown crystals, this specimen is exceptional as it consists of two generations: at the lower base you can see sharp terminated cubic crystals (they show violet color) and the upper part consists of huge stepped crystals (they are a modification of cubic and rhombic habit). These larger crystals (up to 55m across) show intense blue color. I used a tiny lamp for my photography and so you see blue and violet color - if you look at the piece in person you and at best under daylight you will see not only two colors; there are many different steps of blue, lavender, violet and purple. The camera cannot catch these nuances like a human eye can do, so it is even more exciting in person.
